Every year in June, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) celebrates in different ways. In this special month, various events are held to recognize the influence of LGBT people around the world and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) Americans. Why was June chosen?
Because it is the Stonewall Riots that took place. An incident that took place in June 1969 was considered to be the activism anniversary of the official gay rights activism. It all started in New York City in a gay bar with no water or a liquor license. During the 1960s, it was almost illegal to openly disclose homosexuality in the United States. Gays may also be fired from jobs, and the U.S. legal system does not offer any protection. Most organizations also do not welcome gays. A village in Manhattan, New York, is home to a large number of gay men and women. Because of the New York City has many laws prohibiting homosexuality in public and private places. So the bar is the safest place for homosexuals to congregate without being harassed.
New York City Mayor Robert F. Wagner, Jr. campaigned to remove gay bars in the city. The liquor license was revoked. Gay people have become the targets of the police and many have been arrested. Because the legal system is against homosexuality, most lawyers would not defend those arrested homosexuals. After the new mayor took office, the police entrapment campaign ended, but the bar had problems with getting a liquor license. Bars that welcome gays are usually owned by the mafia. They do not treat the regular army well, but pay the police to prevent raids.
But, In the early morning, On June 28, 1969, The police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City, a bar that catered to and provided a space for members of the LGBTQ community. While the practice was fairly common, that night people fought back. called for the establishment of places where gays and lesbians can go and open their sexual orientation. In such places, one should not be afraid of being arrested. The riots were a catalyst for the rights of LGBT people. Since the incident, many gay rights organizations have been established. Not just in the United States, but around the world.
Who started the June celebration?
Known as the “mother of pride” was Branda Howard who coordinated the first LGBT Pride Parade in 1970. It also sparked the idea of a week of activities around the “Pride Day.” These events than developed into the annual LGBT celebrations held in June each year.
